TuneIn is a privately held company based in Palo Alto, California founded by Bill Moore as RadioTime in Dallas, Texas in 2002. TuneIn’s website and free mobile apps offer users the ability to listen to streaming audio of over 100,000 radio networks and radio stations worldwide, including AM, FM, HD, LP, digital and internet stations. Additionally, over four million podcasts are available for streaming on TuneIn and has a directory which carries the most comprehensive list of sports, news, talk, and music from around the world.
In May 2014, TuneIn announced that its service had over 50 million monthly active users. Raising over $47 million in venture funding from Institutional Venture Partners, Sequoia Capital, Google Ventures, General Catalyst Partners, and Jafco Ventures, the mobile app is available for the web at TuneIn.com, and is available on all smartphones and tablets, including over 55 vehicle models. It is generally suited for iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Samsung, Windows Phone, and on over 200 connected devices/platforms.
TuneIn’s website is currently available in 22 different languages. Each language has its own version of the website with content tailored for the specific language or region.
To get onto TuneIn’s platform, Broadcasters send a request to add their stations by visiting www.tunein.com/broadcasters where a form is made available. Once the form is filled out, the request submission is reviewed after which an email is sent to you for confirmation. Broadcasters can also confirm the listing of their stations by searching the station name on TuneIn.com within 72 hours.
TuneIn radio app allows broadcasters an opportunity to know how many unique listeners tuned in to their station, how many listens (tunes) their station had, how long people listened for as well as where their listeners came from. To the listener, TuneIn makes available online a hassle-free audio content, whether it’s music, talk shows, or whatever else, allowing one to even tune into actual radio stations and all of this is available for free.
