Strengthening Ghana’s Defenses Against Disinformation: Penplusbytes Advances OGP Commitments

ogp

In an era of rapid digital transformation, Ghana, like many other nations, faces significant challenges due to the spread of misinformation and disinformation both online and offline.

As part of its Open Government Partnership (OGP) commitments, Ghana has pledged to implement stronger frameworks to combat this issue and enhance relevant legislation. Despite efforts to combat mis/disinformation, there remains a gap in the legal framework, public awareness, and cohesive collaboration among key stakeholders to effectively tackle information disorder.

To address this gap, Penplusbytes, with support from Open Government Partnership is spearheading a comprehensive campaign to advance Ghana’s commitments in countering misinformation and disinformation.

Touching on this initiative, Precious Ankomah, Head of Programmes at Penplusbytes, stated that the project will conduct research on existing efforts in Ghana to counter misinformation and disinformation and use the results to advocate for improved digital platform governance, legal reforms and media and information literacy among citizens.

To ensure maximum impact, she emphasized that, “the project will employ a multi-stakeholder strategy by forming a coalition of CSOs, media professionals and tech experts to undertake a concerted advocacy towards shaping policy to curb the menace of information disorder.”

By strengthening Ghana’s resilience against misinformation and disinformation, this project will safeguard the country’s information space and reinforce democratic values.
