Penplusbytes to Convene High-level Virtual Dialogue on Leveraging AI-Driven Data and Media Advocacy to Combat Illegal Mining (Galamsey) in Ghana

Webinar

In commemoration of World Environment Day 2025, Penplusbytes, under its Climate Change and Wellbeing thematic area, is convening a high-level virtual dialogue to explore the potential of integrating AI-driven innovations to bridge existing policy gaps, strengthen environmental monitoring systems, empower media investigations, and promote safer mining practices.

The event, themed “Mobilizing Media Connectivity and AI-Driven Data to Hold Illegal Miners Accountable,” will bring together key stakeholders, including tech experts, activists, policymakers, environmental groups, and media representatives, to galvanize around technology-based solutions to tackle the persistent and destructive threat of illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey.”

Scheduled for Wednesday, June 4, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM GMT on Zoom, the discussion will also highlight the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and media innovation in improving transparency, accountability, and sustainability in Ghana’s mining sector.

Touching on the rationale behind this webinar, Team Lead for Penplusbytes’ Climate Change & Wellbeing desk, Emmanuel Koranteng Asomani explained that, For years, the national discourse on galamsey has focused mostly on reactive enforcement measures, while overlooking the transformative potential of technology-driven solutions like artificial intelligence (AI) despite its proven effectiveness in addressing similar challenges globally. This dialogue aims to shift the focus from reactive to proactive, tech-enabled strategies.”

This initiative solidifies Penplusbytes’ commitment to using technology as a governance tool, advancing evidence-based, tech-driven solutions for climate and environmental challenges under our Climate and Wellbeing thematic area.

The event is free and open to the public, with registration required. Visit: https://bit.ly/PPBWebinar to register.
